The village church is a modern building from 1962 and 1963. Its unusual roof recalls an upturned boat hull, an interesting contrast to the old fieldstone churches of the region. Worth a look precisely because it is so different.

History and coat of arms

The hamlet of Ohrsee was documented as early as 1281, but today’s municipality only came about in 1938 through the merger of Gokels and Ohrsee. Today the hamlets of Dorf Gokels, Klein Hamburg and Oeverdiek belong to it. Exactly how the name Gokels arose cannot be said with certainty, so I would rather stay honest than guess. The coat of arms, by contrast, is intriguing: a wavy bar stands for the water of the heath, three stones recall a megalithic tomb and a porridge pot points to the plague of 1713 and the old field name Grapenberg. So the small village carries a good piece of history on its shield.
