Schenefeld is a small country town in the Steinburg district, set quietly on the river Bekau and the seat of the district of the same name. One thing first: this is not the larger Schenefeld near Hamburg but the central Holstein town, only about ten to twenty minutes south of Hanerau-Hademarschen. Its greatest treasure is the ancient church of St Boniface, one of the oldest churches in Schleswig-Holstein. From our guesthouse in Liesbüttel it is a short, rewarding drive.

The church of St Boniface

The heart of Schenefeld is the church of St Boniface. It is considered one of the oldest churches in Schleswig-Holstein and is called the mother church of the Holsten, because in early times a wide surrounding area was served by it. Its origins reach far back into the Middle Ages, into the period between the 9th and the 12th century. Standing before this building, you sense how deeply the Christian history of the region is rooted here. For current opening and visiting times it is best to ask locally or at the parish.

Early history

Schenefeld is one of the very old places in the region. As early as around 1076 the chronicler Adam of Bremen mentioned a place called Scanafeld that is linked with Schenefeld. From the same early period comes the Esesfeld, a fortification from the time of Charlemagne around 809 on the river Stör. Exactly where the Esesfeld lay is disputed among experts, however, so I mention it only as a conjecture and not as established fact. Around 1120 the missionary Vicelin worked in this area. The coat of arms of 1980 sums the place up in three symbols: a nettle leaf as an old Holstein emblem, a mill wheel for water power and a church tower for the important old church.
