Cruise ship EUROPA on the Kiel Canal

🚢 Things to Do

Ship spotting and cruise ships on the Kiel Canal

On the busiest artificial waterway in the world, freighters and cruise ships pass by close enough to touch.

Some guests come just for the ships. The Kiel Canal is one of the busiest artificial waterways in the world, with around 70 vessels passing on an average day and almost 25,000 a year. From the bank the container giants, tankers and bulk carriers look enormous, and with a little patience you almost always catch one in your photo.

From the guesthouse you reach the water within minutes. In the Steenfeld hamlet of Fischerhütte sits the historic 1950 chain ferry, where the ships pass especially close. Close by, the Grünental high bridge gives you a view from above onto the canal and the ships. If you want to see more, plan a trip to the locks and the Rendsburg high bridge.

The best viewpoints on the Kiel Canal

Canal bank and chain ferry at Fischerhütteright here, approx. 2 km

The historic 1950 chain ferry and the ships close enough to touch, a quiet spot by the water with a place to stop under lime trees. Ideal for sunrises and sunsets over the canal.

Grünental high bridgevery close by

From the bridge you look down onto the canal and the passing ships, with a wide panoramic view over the landscape. One of the closest viewpoints of all and great when a big ship is announced.

Hochdonn high bridgewest, nearby

A twin-track steel high bridge, 42 m above the canal, plus the canal ferry. A striking lattice silhouette with ships beneath, especially lovely with the sun low.

Rendsburg high bridge, transporter ferry & ship greeting stationabout 30 km east

The 1913 landmark spans the canal at 42 m, with the transporter ferry swinging below. At the ship greeting station big ships are welcomed with the national anthem and their details announced. Great passages from the south bank in Osterrönfeld.

Brunsbüttel lockssouth-west, day trip

Where the canal meets the Elbe, with viewing platforms onto huge ships, cruise liners and the lock technology.

Kiel-Holtenau locksnorth-east, day trip

The Baltic end of the canal with a viewing platform and a view of the fjord, another classic spot for ship watchers.

Cruise ships on the canal

Cruise ships pass slowly and majestically through the canal again and again. Regulars are the EUROPA and the Europa 2, along with smaller luxury liners. The very largest ships such as the biggest AIDA do not fit through the canal and go around. You rarely get this close to these ships from the bank, best of all from the Grünental high bridge or the canal bank at Fischerhütte.

When does the next ship come?

The big passages are easy to plan for. Using ship traffic apps with AIS data you can see which ships are under way and when they reach your section. The live map above helps with this, and the canal webcams add to the timing. There is traffic almost all the time, so you rarely wait long.
