Neumünster is the largest town in the wider area around our guesthouse and an independent town in the middle of Holstein. It lies on the river Schwale, with no access to the sea, and is a good destination if you fancy a bit more bustle. A designer outlet, a zoo, an unusual textile museum and a fine sculpture park offer plenty of variety in a single day. From our guesthouse in Liesbüttel it is about forty minutes by car.
Proud town of Neumünster
inhabitants
And rumour has it that on a good Saturday more bargain hunters crowd into the designer outlet than the town has inhabitants. They can never be counted exactly, for most of them are just disappearing into a fitting room.

On around twenty-four hectares of woodland live over seven hundred animals of many species. A lovely destination for families, with seasonally changing opening times that you should check before your visit.
The Großflecken is the central square of the town centre and the heart of town life. All around, shops and cafés invite you to wander and linger.
Museums and art
The only textile and industrial museum in Schleswig-Holstein tells the story of the cloth makers through the example of Neumünster. Many hands-on stations bring the visit to life, a good tip in the rain too.
The Herbert Gerisch Foundation maintains a landscape park of around three hectares on the Schwale with international contemporary art. The Art Nouveau Villa Wachholtz also shows changing exhibitions.
The classicist Vicelin church was built between 1829 and 1834 to a design by C. F. Hansen and is considered one of the most important classicist church buildings in the region.
History
The name Neumünster goes back to the year 1127, when the missionary Vicelin founded a collegiate church on the Schwale, the new minster or Novum Monasterium. The town grew from it. Later Neumünster became famous for its crafts: for centuries cloth makers and the textile industry shaped the place, along with a large leather industry. The last cloth factory closed in 1991, and leather production had already ended in the 1960s. The Tuch und Technik museum keeps this history alive to this day.
