You can reach the Dithmarschen and Eiderstedt North Sea coast in about 40 to 70 minutes. The whole foreshore belongs to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. Shrimp cutters, mudflat walks and wide beaches await.
The loveliest destinations
A maritime hub with the largest shrimp-cutter fleet on the west coast, fresh shrimp straight from the boat and real harbour atmosphere.
A sandy beach that runs for kilometres with its iconic stilt houses, and in season you can park right on the sand at Ording.
The only authorised rearing station for seal pups in Schleswig-Holstein, with feedings and plenty for families.
The largest national park visitor centre with aquariums and a sperm whale skeleton, great in the rain too.
The "cathedral of the Dithmarschen" and a pretty old town with cafés, easy to combine with Meldorf Bay.
A mudflat walk in the World Heritage Site
A guided mudflat walk from Büsum belongs to any North Sea day. Only head onto the flats with trained guides and keep an eye on the tide table, because at low water the sea is far out. There are short mudflat walks for little ones too.
